The surprise is in how the colors blend. How the colors mesh into each other. How the colors take on a life of their own - yet they are completely see-through. The advantage of watercolors is that they ARE NOT OPAQUE. Watercolors are fresh, airy and light.
To achieve the accuracy I strive for I need control and that is why I work with smaller sized paper. My watercolors painting are 30 cm by 40 cm not large but large enough for me to express and for the viewer to visualize and capture the beauty of the details.
I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my watercolor paintings and although it is very difficult to achieve accuracy I am able to do it via the paper I use. I use a high standard white cotton paper that absorbs the paints in a manner that helps me achieve the accuracy and transparency that I am looking for.
Collection of Nude Paintings - how I started:
What is your concept?
My concept with this collection of watercolor paintings is
to portray the nude body in an innovative and fresh manner. Traditionally one
does not see paintings of the body in watercolors – most are traditionally
portrayed in either oil or acrylic. The innovation that I bring is to portray
then in a see through manner that watercolors are able to offer.
What is your story, and why does it matter?
I love the way Lucian Freud portrays faces and the body. I
love the way he extenuates the wrinkles, lines, curves and anything he feels he
can dive into and highlight it further. He does this in his unique way via the
use of oil paints. I wanted to take the same paintings and remove all scenery
such as cloth, sofa, pillow or anything else that was in the room and just concentrate
on the body. I took the pose of the body, stayed as true to the pose as
possible and portrayed it in my style and with the use of watercolors.
What is truly unique and compelling about your work?
My style of painting in watercolors is exact watercolor
painting by that I mean that my lines are clear, the borders are clear; the
colors are contained in one area. This is not common with watercolor artists
that leave undefined lines and areas. I use both watercolors and watercolor
pencils to accent the areas that require highlighting for a more pronounced
look.
How does that translate into something wonderful for
them?
Looking at my collection of Lucian Freud inspired Nude Bodies
of both men and women one can clearly see what I am trying to say. I am free in
watercolors to take reality and change it into a dream, an outlook or into the
altered reality that one may want to visualize.
